What to Eat with Natto:  Sauces & Spices

What to Eat with Natto: Sauces & Spices

Here in Japan, packages of natto typically include a soy sauce based sauce called "tare" and a spicy yellow mustard called "karashi."

Most Japanese people enjoy their natto with this sauce and condiment, and it's the traditional flavor that I like with my sticky, stringy beans too.

But it's not the only flavor that I've come to enjoy.

Some pairing ideas I find tasty are:

Idea #1:  Japanese Citrus Vinegar (ponzu), Japanese Citrus Pepper
(yuzukosho)
& Turmeric (ukon)

Idea #2:  Ponzu & Red Chili Pepper (togarashi)

Idea #3:  Ponzu, Yuzukosho & Grated Radish (daikon-oroshi)

Idea #4:  Soy Sauce (shoyu), Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Yuzukosho

Idea #5:  Shoyu & Japanese Horseradish (wasabi)

Idea #6:  Shoyu & Togarashi

Idea #7:  Shoyu, Black Vinegar (kurozu) & Garlic (nin-niku)

Idea #8:  Chipotle Hot Sauce

Idea #9:  Chili Oil (ra-yu), Fried Garlic & Fried Onion, Kurozu & Shoyu

Idea #10:  Shoyu, Ukon & Ginger (shoga)

Idea #11:  Perilla (aojiso) & Shoyu

Idea #12:  Shoyu & Brown Sugar (kurozatou) (Sweet & Salty Natto)

Start off by adding 1 teaspoon of sauce/vinegar and 1/4 teaspoon of spice/seasoning to your natto.

*These measurements above were converted from the amounts typically found in packages of natto sold here in Japan (tare: 5.5g & karashi: 1.2g).

Mix in a circular motion 20 - 30 times to bring out the flavor of the fermented soybeans.

*If the flavor is too weak, add more sauce/vinegar or spice/seasoning to your liking.

*If the flavor is too strong, add more natto and continue mixing.

Try out these paring ideas to see which ones your taste buds like best.

If none of the pairings are satisfying your palate, mix and match the different sauces, spices and flavors to come up with additional ideas.

Have fun and enjoy some natto goodness!

These pairings are some of my favorites.

What to Eat with Natto: Tortilla

Are you ready to start your morning off with a Japanese superfood?

Then it's "Natto Taco" time!

Breakfast-style!

This is definitely a unique combination, but it's oh so good.

Warm up a tortilla and scramble some eggs.

Put the eggs in the tortilla along with some sautéed veggies.

Add some leafy vegetables like romaine lettuce, and top all of it off with some fermented soybean goodness.

Add some avocado or any other condiments to your liking and enjoy your "Natto Taco."

The second idea I have is for meat lovers.

I call this idea "Meaty Natto Taco."

Cook up your favorite meat to your liking and put it in a warm tortilla.

Top the meat with natto and add some sautéed veggies, avocado, leafy romaine lettuce, cheese and salsa.

Close up the tortilla and enjoy!
